Grendel has been with us for almost 23 years now, and, from the beginning, Matt Wagner has explored the limits of Grendel for all to read. In Devil’s Reign he takes us into a world battle between SCAUR and UNOW, the United Nations of the World. Grendel, with his powerful friends Manny the psychic and General Orion Assante, have positioned themselves to win, no matter which side “wins.” Manny and Orion, in a visit to Peru, play one more hand in their global aspirations, with results that push the world into a conflict that is sure to have lasting repercussions.

In Devil’s Reign Wagner displays a different style of storytelling. Combining text and limited art in a graphic-novel format, he moves the story ahead in an effective fashion, with illustrations that only highlight dialogue, not narrative content. This inventive format creates a tale that moves ahead at a fast pace, while not losing the reader.
