The Viz

The Viz is one of the stranger magazines to appear on British newsstands in recent years. It’s a bimonthly humor magazine which reads like a particularly obnoxious underground comic crossed with the Weekly World News.

The pages alternate between one-and two-pagers featuring characters like “Sweary Mary” and “Johnny Fartpants”; odd tabloid-style coverage of subjects ranging from crocodiles to royal toilet training; and the occasional fumetti comedy piece (comic-like stories with photographs instead of drawings). Scatological references abound, and the dialog is certainly not for those who prefer to veer away from four-letter Anglo-Saxonisms. Nevertheless, its unabashedly lowbrow appeal has brought it circulation far in excess of many of its more respectable contemporaries.
