Silver Age: Showcase
(DC, 2000)
™ and ©2000 DC Comics
Part of DC’s Silver Age crossover event, this one-shot bands together seven of DC’s most popular Silver Age characters: Deadman, Blackhawk, Metamorpho, Batgirl, Adam Strange, Mento of the Doom Patrol and an all-new Shining Knight. Calling themselves the 7 Soldiers of Victory (after the Golden Age super-team that appeared in Leading Comics) the group must fight a newly formed Injustice League, consisting of the greatest arch-criminals of the JLA, including Lex Luthor, Catwoman and others. As a one-shot, this issue can’t hold a candle to a typical issue of the original Showcase at the height of its 1960s run (after all, we are talking about a title that almost single-handedly launched the Silver Age, reviving the Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, Hawkman and others). But writer Geoff Johns (JSA) turns in a diverting enough tale. The highlight of the issue, though, has to be cover and interior art by longtime Batman artist and all-around DC legend, Dick Giordano.
