Kid Montana
(Charlton, 1957-1965)
™ and © Charlton Publications, Inc.
Kid Montana was an intrepid young gunfighter who roamed the northern range protecting honest settlers and foiling the plots of desperados, cattle rustlers, claim jumpers and other stock Western bad guys. His exploits also brought him into conflict with the region’s original inhabitants, the fierce Sioux nation, told in typical pre-PC “cowboys-and-Indians” style. Kid Montana was the product of Charlton Publications, whose meager production values were nevertheless up to the standards of 1950s and 60s Westerns. The early stories, with art signed by “Mastroserio” and (unusually for Charlton) lettered by hand, are crisp, well told, and illustrated in a clean if unspectacular style. Kid Montana changed titles to Gunfighters (Charlton) in the mid-1960s.
