Jennifer Janus, Olivia Arancina, and Pearl Penalosa are three fashionable young women living large in the city. They hang out and party and lament their love lives, just like any group of good-looking urban singles. Of course, at least one of them is a professional super–heroine. (Not the ones with the alliterative names—that’s always a dead giveaway.)

In this series, characterization is king, and the super–heroics are strictly incidental. Ultra is no more about being a super-hero than Seinfeld was about being a comedian. It’s a McGuffin.

The super–hero aspect does add nice twists. The interaction with a catty rival in #2, for example, takes unusual turns. (Don’t miss her departure in the background!)

While geared toward guys with a Maxim–style flavor, Ultra may appeal to women, considering its strong, realistic female protagonists and inviting art. It may look like a men’s magazine, but it reads more like a prime–time dramedy and does not venture so far into the land of the chick flick as to turn off some male readers.
