David Mack’s very impressive series came to Image in 1998, following a legion of one-shots and mini-series at Caliber. Mack uses a multitextured, mixed-media style to illustrate the tale of a young girl turned into a weapon of vengeance. It’s an intensely psychological series which explores the story from the private thoughts of the characters, rather than merely filling in time between action sequences.

As the series begins, Kabuki is interned in a secret institution designed to house agents who have run amok or broken down in some way. There, she exchanges countless messages with a fellow inmate called Akemi, all written on tiny squares of paper folded into bits of origami. Over the course of the first four issues, she meets her friend in person, as well as the other members of her circle. Together, they launch a bold plan to break out of this asylum of spies, all the while playing sly games with the doctors who are trying to unlock their secrets.
