Skin

The creators, Peter Milligan (Enigma) and Brendon McCarthy, want you to know that this is not a very nice book. On the other hand, it’s a very important work. Skin’s story is about the drug thalidomide, prescribed as a sedative for pregnant women in the 1950s, and responsible for producing children with terrible birth defects. These “thalidomide children” might be born without brains, lungs, or with grotesquely foreshortened limbs.

Martin Atchison (“Martin ’Atchit” to his friends) was one of these children. Born under a chemical curse he grew up as twisted as his body. The only place he fit in was with his friends, a gang of skinheads. Like them, Martin wants mostly to get drunk, get lucky, and take out some aggression on any poor sod who gets in his way. But Martin is such a crunched-up ball of misery and self-hatred that he’ll never find peace—until he catches up with the people responsible for making him what he is.
