X-Babies: Reborn
(Marvel, 2000)
™ and ©2000 Marvel Characters, Inc.
Mojo, the interdimensional villain from the pages of Longshot, rules his universe as an overbearing, arrogant, egotistical television mogul. In an ever-expanding need for ratings, he created miniature doppelgangers of the X-Men to supply content for his media empire. They are called The X-Babies and previously appeared in X-Babies: Murderama. This sequel features the premiere of more of Mojo’s creations, this time patterned after the Avengers and called The Mitey ‘Vengers. Of course they battle until the contemptuous nature of Mojo is revealed.
The stupefying cute factor displayed in both dialogue and art is enough to make one’s teeth hurt. The execution is so saccharine that this book should come with a warning to diabetics. X-Babies was Kitty Pryde’s condescending nickname for The New Mutants when they first came to Professor Xavier’s school and then the X-Men were de-aged in X-Men annual #12 which gave the term added significance. But somehow someone believed that it was a concept that should be perpetuated. It is instead, an embarrassing display of corporate cluelessness that seems to have “inspired” Rob Liefeld’s Extremely Youngblood.
