Mickey Mouse and Friends

If you’d like a quick and easy test to see just how good any given comic-book artist is, have them try to draw Mickey Mouse. Given the contents of sample issue Mickey & Friends #257, it’s obviously no easy feat — even for those sanctioned by the Disney corporation. Like Noel Van Horn: a tremendous talent, but the Mickey in “Is This House Haunted?” is both elastic and awkward, stretching oddly off-model in places. (The artist is obviously more comfortable drawing ducks than mice, since the supporting cast consists of Duckburg residents).
Much, much better is Ferioli’s smooth and fluid mouse in “Mother Hen Mickey.” It’s a neat little story that’s a real showcase for what is known as “short pants Mickey;” a regular guy who gets caught up in events bigger than himself but triumphs over them through common sense and courage. As a huge Mickey fan, I can safely say that overall this one satisfies. The only complaint: Let’s see longer, more adventurous stories in future.
