30 Days of Night artist Ben Templesmith takes a leave of absence from his frequent partnership with master horror writer Steve Niles to undertake this solo project, a surprising departure into a genre he’s typically not associated with: science fiction. And there are plenty of cool ideas presented within. Unfortunately, most of them aren’t his own.
Oh, the idea of microscopic alien spores migrating to Earth is clever, just as it was in Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Planet–wide domination by machines was très chic in The Matrix, less so here. The collective intelligence of this invasive species isn’t unlike what made The Borg so cool in Star Trek: The Next Generation. And the apocalyptic ending is as over–sensational as the one just like it in Beneath the Planet of the Apes. At least, his art has a new element that it typically lacked: color. Understand, though: This isn’t that bad a story. But it tries way too hard to be different and ends up being only derivative. Templesmith gets lost trying to prove himself. It’s like listening to an Art Garfunkel solo album.
