Batman: Birth of the Demon

The Caped Crusader has been plagued by Ra’s al Ghul since way back in Batman #238. This villain is essentially immortal, having lived since the time of the Crusades. His is the secret of life and death. He possesses knowledge that lets him renew himself whenever he has become too wounded or aged to continue.

In this graphic novel, we finally learn the full story of how the demon Ra’s al Ghul came to be. It is the story of a well-meaning doctor who discovered how to transmute poisons into agents of great healing. He used this discovery to save a Sultan’s son from death—only to have this kindness repaid with the murder of the physician’s own beloved. From that moment, the healer’s life has been dedicated toward revenge, and wiping away all traces of a world that has brought him nothing but heartbreak and sorrow.
