As a member of the Protectors, the Ferret was often portrayed as feral and out-of-control. Both physically and characteristically, he seemed to be Malibu’s version of Sabretooth, complete with blonde hair and razor-sharp claws.

Now that he stars in his own series, he seems to have undergone a personality transformation. Cal Denton (his real name) shows that under the tough exterior, he has an innate sense of honor and compassion—even (dare we say it?) a certain gentleness at times. That’s not to say that he’s any less of a fighter, or that he wouldn’t contemplate super-gluing Amazing Man’s head to the pillow from time to time. It’s just that this series is showing Cal with some depth. Far from weakening his appeal, this makes him more interesting both as Cal Denton and as The Ferret.
