I Love A Mystery

With its unconventional trio of leads of Doc, Jack, and Reggie (who were far more complicated than many other radio heroes), I Love a Mystery was a series far ahead of its time, so it’s unfortunate that this adaptation of their audio adventure “The Fear That Crept like a Cat” leaves a lot to be desired.

The back-cover copy promises that this is the story “in its entirety,” but there sure seem to be missing panels, as readers have to take it on faith when a girl pulls a gun on the boys—because no gun is visible. It also makes the mistake of trying to turn a comic strip into a graphic novel by enlarging certain panels, which only brings unwanted attention to the professional but bland, strangely un-detailed art of Don Sherwood.

And, while creator Carlton E. Morse was a master of ratcheting up tension in the pacing, it doesn’t play very well on the page—so that, when the story finally gets to the island of titular cats, it’s something of a letdown.
