By the early 1970s, Marvel had created several “Marvel…” titles based on reprints of their work from just a few years past. The Amazing Spider-Man reprints of Marvel Tales and the Fantastic Four reprints of Marvel’s Greatest Comics were joined in 1973 by Marvel Spectacular, which reprinted stories from the early days of Thor.

Marvel Spectacular reprised the glory days of Thor, beginning with #1’s reprint of Thor #128, and continuing in sequence until issue #19’s reprint of Thor #145. These were the classic Jack Kirby issues, showing Thor taking on both gods and men in heroic battle. As an added bonus, early issues contained Tales of Asgard as a backup feature. These stories gave new readers background on the spectacular mythical world that Thor hailed from.
