War Story: Nightingale

    (Vertigo, 2002)
™ and ©2002 DC Comics, Inc.

The last of four double-sized one-shots providing a heart-pounding close-up look at life and death on the front lines of World War II, “Nightingale” is a naval tale following a British destroyer’s course through dark sea heading toward a darker hell…

While escorting fully loaded merchantmen across a cold stormy Atlantic toward a starving Russia, the captain and crew of the Nightingale receive urgent orders to break up the convoy due to imminent threats from opposing surface ships. The orders are carried out and later, after vicious attacks from U-boats, the Nightingale is the only vessel to return from the original escort. Now branded as “bad luck” by the rest of the navy, the Nightingale is a damned ship and its crew sullenly awaits their next mission with a silent understanding there is a debt to be paid…and with hope for some kind of redemption.

Death…O Death, how cold is thy sting.
