Fight Man

    (Marvel, 1993)

Perhaps the biggest cliché of the modern super-hero comic is the Obligatory Fight Scene. Whether it’s the heroes beating up the bad guys, the bad guys beating up the heroes, or two heroes mistrusting the other’s motives and beating themselves up—somehow the writers inevitably manage to fill several pages with mindless mayhem.

Marvel, one of the most notorious practitioners of this, manages to spoof itself in this well-placed special. The “star” is Fight Man, an unimaginative loser whose solution to every problem is to pulverize it. This is only a one-shot special, but for Fight Man, one shot is all he needs.
