Badger (Vol. 2)
(First, 1991)
™ and ©1991 First Comics, Inc.
Norbert Sykes is a Vietnam veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome, multiple personality disorder, and probably a few other things as well. His main personality is the Badger, a super-hero of sorts inspired by a delusional meeting with a giant Badger he experienced while a captive in a Viet Nam prison camp.
In Badger Bedlam (the one-shot “Volume 2” of Badger), Sykes is captured by the police and brought to trial for battery and resisting arrest. Unfortunately, Sykes experiences a personality switch in court and is subsequently sent to the Reich Center For Phobic Disorders. It is in this so-called hospital that Norbert is left in a dark cell for dead after a bout with shock therapy. It’s a setting all too familiar to the crazed hero, reminding him of his stint in a prison camp in Viet Nam. Dining on cockroaches and falling into insanity, the Badger is right at home in his new digs.
