Hellsing

England seems to be a hotbed of paranormal activity these days. There’s a special quality about protecting the honor of a faded Empire—especially one plagued by a resurgence of bloodthirsty zombies. When the police and special forces can’t handle the job, that’s where the Hellsing agency comes in. This covert operation employs a “vampire hunter” specially suited for the task, since he wields a nasty temper and a gun loaded with silver bullets.

Sir Hellsing is actually the woman Integra, who inherited control of this royal order of Protestant Knights when she unleashed the long-hidden secret weapon known as Alucard (Dracula spelled backward, obviously). Can she control this killer once he saves a policewoman by turning her into a vampire, too? Or will the bayonet-chucking Father Anderson from the secret agency of the rival Vatican, the Iscariot Organization, put them all out of business permanently?

Named in homage to Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, the nemesis of Dracula in Bram Stoker’s novel, this series serves up enough blood to supply the Red Cross. Piling up the body count with sheer abandon, creator Hirano exhibits a flamboyant talent for in-your-face action. Far superior in style and substance to its anime adaptation, this manga will please horror fans dead into the night.
