Martha Washington Saves the World

    (Dark Horse, 1997-1999)
™ and ©1997 Dave Gibbons and Frank Miller Inc.

You might think the title gives everything away, but writer/creator Frank Miller (Batman: The Dark Knight, Sin City) knows that the telling can be more important than the denouement.

Miller teams again with Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) as Martha Washington returns in this three-issue series. She is sent back to space on a secret mission after having just survived a near-catastrophic reentry caused by the global coordination system. Code-named Venus, it apparently has become self-aware with delusions of godhood. But Martha’s appeal to have it reprogrammed is not only ignored, but is considered insubordinate. When the “top-secret mission” is revealed to be a routine scientific observation assignment, it appears that Martha is being set up, especially since her love, Wasserstein, is not only mysteriously involved, but also emotionally distraught about it.
