Supermodels in the Rainforest

    (Sirius, 1998-1999)
™ and ©1998 Marc Kayne and Dean Hamilton

Sometimes a title says it all. This black-and-white comic takes seven gorgeous supermodels, drops them into the Amazon rainforest for a photo shoot, and then confronts them with various problems, including a hulking corporate bulldozer. Along the way the models encounter native warriors sworn to safeguard the land and a tribe of Amazons, whose queen proclaims our heroines the Chosen Ones, destined to bring the dying rainforest’s plight to the world.

Though dealing with a serious issue, the title is relatively lighthearted, recognizing the incongruity between the message and the scantily clad messengers. Beginning in 1993 as a video featuring well-known supermodels, the cause evolved into this three-issue mini-series featuring lesser-known models on photo covers and a handful of interior shots. Written by Sirius editor Mark Bellis and publisher Robb Horan, and respectably drawn by several artists, it presents environmentally conscious stories that steer clear of both preachiness and excessively racy content. There are some sexy images—naturally—but no nudity. Some proceeds go to Rainforest International.
