The Young Cynics Club

    (Dark Horse, 1993)
™ and ©1993 Glen Wong

Glen Wong created this unusual and refreshing tale. It’s the story of a group of friends on the edge of adulthood who meet every night on the beach to swap stories and hang out. The group consists of Stuey, who dreams of being a writer, but who has put that dream on hold to work a boring job; Marco, who seems headed for disaster in the forms of drinking, drugs, and petty theft; Nathan, “the starving artist” who is trying to reconcile himself to joining the adult world; and Gabe, who will soon be leaving town with his parents, breaking up the gang. But the gang is slowly breaking up anyway, as the friends begin to grow up and go their separate ways.

The Young Cynics Club is a rare look at the real problems of growing up. Funny, sad, and philosophical…it’s a shame there aren’t more comics like it.
