The Godfather’s Code
(NBM, 2004)
™ and © 2004 P. Craig Russell
It’s always nice when a comic book appears that you can show off to someone who doesn’t read comics as proof why they should. Nothing breaks down their preconceptions about the medium faster than being able to say, “Oh, and it’s based on an opera.”
That said, regular comics readers should jettison their own prejudices: “Opera” doesn’t need to translate as “dry and dismal.” An opera is a story, and this one concerns an explosive love triangle, simply and beautifully interpreted by P. Craig Russell.
There are no heroes or villains here, just people living their lives, and the evidence of Russell’s genius is in his ability to get the reader to connect emotionally to the characters in spite of their distance in both place and time. There’s a purity of storytelling and a level of artistic proficiency here not seen often enough in American comics.
— S.A. Bennett
