She-Hulk

Marvel’s latest She-Hulk series, the third, takes a fresh approach. This time, our favorite green-skinned glamour girl isn’t Savage or Sensational, she’s just She-Hulk. She doesn’t break the fourth wall (and fewer brick walls). This series plays up Jennifer Walters’ abilities as a super-hero and lawyer. (This is a role which Matt Murdock has messed up considerably over the years—see many past CBG features on comic–book legal plots by lawyer Bob Ingersoll.)

Each stand–alone story spotlights a different case. One addresses a question relevant in a world where people routinely return from the dead: Do ghosts’ testimonies carry legal weight in their own murder trials? In another, Spider-Man sues The Daily Bugle for years of libel. They’re the sort of matters Batton Lash’s Supernatural Law has had fun with for a decade; writer Dan Slott takes a more serious tone.

There are a few questions left hanging by the end of each issue. Can we legally imprison ghosts without due process? Can Spidey’s lawyer add defendants to his civil suit with the plaintiff’s approval? (Bob?)

Juan Bobillo’s She-Hulk is cuter than most, with an almost-manga look. At first, her facial cuteness doesn’t seem to match her buff bod, but the look grows on the reader.
