Judge Dredd-Lawman of the Future
(Fleetway Quality, 1995-1996)
™ and ©1996 Fleetway Editions, Ltd.
This fortnightly title (every two weeks) was begun on July 28, 1995. Like its predecessor, the Judge Dredd Megazine, it starred Joe Dredd, a futuristic law enforcer from a crime-ridden future. As a welcome change, Lawman of the Future contains all new stories. Previous titles had simply recapped the Judge Dredd stories from other publications, notably 2000 A.D.
Among the best stories are those which brought out the bizarre aspects of a world where overcrowding and almost total unemployment leave the populace in a desperate search to find entertainment and a purpose in life. These themes are wonderfully portrayed in stories like “The Fattie Olympics” where overeating has become high sport, and the contestants are so obese that special “bellywheels” are required to wheel their stomachs around.
