Cliff Steele—Robotman—has been laying low for a number of years, working a high-risk high salary job to help fund a personal project—bottom line, he is out of the super-hero business…until one day.

After a mere matter of happenstance (and super-heroes in the comic books tend to find themselves in those a lot) Robotman ends up getting the attention of a certain CEO who is in the market for an experienced super-hero—one who could train and lead a new special-abilities task force he put together and wishes to promote. This team of young spitfires consists of heat-raising Fever, fast-action Kid Slick, future-seeing Fast Forward and the mysterious yet beautiful Freak.

With the offer of an even bigger salary and a bit of “arm-twisting,” the CEO manages to hire Robotman for the job as well as secure the rights to use the name—Doom Patrol!
