Rolling Stones: Voodoo Lounge
(Marvel, 1995)
™ and ©1995 R.Z.O. Productions, Inc. Cover and illustrations ©1995 Dave McKean
The Rolling Stones have often been called “the world’s greatest rock and roll band.” Having burst onto the music scene in the sixties, the band was still going strong with their mid-nineties release of their Voodoo Lounge album.
In an unusual move, Marvel Music (an imprint of Marvel Comics) commissioned Dave McKean to combine lyrics from the Stone’s latest album with his own art. McKean is well-known in the comics field for his unique Sandman covers, his solo work on Cages, and his collaborations with Neil Gaiman on such works as Violent Cases and The Tragical Comedy or Comical Tragedy of Mr. Punch. With Voodoo Lounge, he merges photography, painting, and graphic effects in a collage-like fashion. The result is decidedly eerie—and perfect for evoking the images alluded to in the Stones’ lyrics.
