Spirit & Image
(Bob House Comics, 2003)
™ and ©2003 Bob House Comics
Spirit & Image would be an anomaly in any decade. It’s a children’s comic set in pre-Columbian times—featuring no super-heroes in a violent metropolis; no gun-toting vigilantes; and no aliens or robots. Instead, the series takes its inspiration from Mayan religion and culture. The book’s star is a kid named Mocum, who is actually the son of The Jaguar, a Mayan god. The Jaguar watches over and protects his people, but since 900 A.D. he has been gone. Now, however, his son is coming of age, and halfway to fulfilling his destiny of defeating the evil Lord Izapa.
