Silverback

    (COMICO, 1989-1990)
™ and ©1989 Matt Wagner

Matt Wagner, famous for his ever changing character, Grendel, wrote Silverback, while William Messner-Loebs, better known for his writing, penciled the series. The three issues of this series center around a Native American shaman-in-training named Dream-Picker.

The time came when Silverback had to go on his own vision quest. He set off into the wilderness and fasted for days until his own personal spirit guide was revealed. For Dream-Picker, the spirit animal was a wolf—but no ordinary wolf. It was Masluv, a spirit of death. When Dream-Picker, sick and raving, returned to his tribe, he was treated as an outcast. Death seemed to hang about him, manifesting itself when a jealous rival killed Wind-In-The-Leaves, Dream-Picker’s childhood love. Suddenly, Masluv appeared, tearing into her attackers. And when he awoke from his own fever, Dream Picker found he had somehow become Argent, the dread wolf.
