This one-shot serves as a prequel of sorts to Troll’s involvement with Youngblood. “Troll” is actually Bartholomew J. Troll, an adventurer who travels to far-off places and hunts down gems and other artifacts for a living. In this regard, and in the dangers he faces, he’s very similar to Indiana Jones—except that the gems Troll steals, he keeps. Despite the risk, it’s a rewarding life for the little guy—until he goes for the big stake and winds up confronting the dread Daemonites!

Troll was created by Rob Liefeld, although draw-alike Jeff Matsuda handles the penciling duties. It contains a veritable catalog of pop culture references, from the obvious similarities to Indiana Jones and the Golden Child to the Troll itself. (Fuzzy-headed “Troll” dolls were all the rage in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Also his name, “Bartholomew J.” seems to be a reference to Bartholomew J. “Bart” Simpson of the Simpsons.)
