Fans of the original cartoon classic are provided with updated versions of Speed, Trixie, Pops and Racer X in Now Comics’ The New Adventures of Speed Racer. Building on the original series’ premise, this latest incarnation of the Speed Racer crew has their backgrounds flushed out even further—an exciting proposition for readers who grew up on the series. Aside from a few new characters and a modernized look for Trixie, the team is provided with an important backstory that adds depth to its characters and their adventures.

As it stands, the folks over at Mach Research are determined to make life easier for the average citizen. Innovations like the Mobile Five (a heavy-duty, all-terrain transport) and the Glide Five (a portable, fast, light airplane) have revolutionized the transportation industry. But perhaps their greatest accomplishment will be the introduction of the solar car—an electric car with a range of over 200 miles. Unfortunately, Pops (the head of the research facility) is lacking the funds to bring his solar-charging model to the masses. Enter Speed Racer and the rest of his team. Behind the wheel of the redesigned Mach 5, the novice racer plans to win the ‘Round-the-World’ circuit and raise the funds necessary to make his father’s dream a reality.
