Ripley’s Believe It or Not Magazine

    (Harvey, 1953-1954)
™ and ©1953 Believe It or Not, Inc.

Published in 1953, this Harvey publication was the first time Ripley’s Believe It or Not! was featured in a regular comic book. A fixture of newspaper strips and paperback books, comics were a perfect medium for this collection of uncanny facts from around the world.

In the four issues of this series, readers learned of how blood extracted from a horse led to a cure for tetanus, the real story behind the first Thanksgiving celebration, and how another turkey sparked a gold rush in Ontario, Canada. Some of these stories were set in traditional comic strip format, whereas others were simply large panels reprinted from Sunday newspapers where they ran originally. A collection of optical illusions and other interesting miscellania rounded out each issue.
