Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man

In an attempt to recharge the Spider-Man family of titles after the frustrating Clone Saga that left the series with a clinging sense of malaise, Marvel cancelled the titles and started over with new numbering in the last half of 1998. This tactic did not seek to reboot the character from his beginnings, it merely started fresh with new numbering. Additionally, John Byrne retold and embellished Spider-Man’s origin in a mini-series, Spider-Man: Chapter One, and this title, Webspinners, retold early episodes of Spider-Man’s career, similar to the approach taken with Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight.

The first arc featured a fleshed-out origin of Mysterio, illustrating the pathos and insecurities of Quentin Beck (Mysterio’s real name), and drawing an eerie parallel to Peter Parker’s demeanor, as they both use their costumed alter egos to find comfort behind a mask. With lush artwork by Michael Zulli, best known for Vertigo titles like Sandman and Witchcraft, the appearance of the cast is exceedingly expressive.
