The Ballad of Utopia
(Black Daze, 1998-1999)
™ and ©1998 Barry Buchanan
The Ballad of Utopia is a dark, foreboding Western by comics newcomer Barry Buchanan. It begins when deputy Samuel David notices a stage relay stop on fire and rides out to investigate. There he finds the body of station keep Charlie Burnette, arms tied, with a bullet in his head. As David brings in the sheriff to help investigate, we’re introduced to the other residents of the town of Utopia, all of whom are strange in their own way, but none of whom seem to have a clear motive for murder. The only thing that’s really clear is that Utopia has a dark side—and more than a few secrets to hide.
