Under the guidance of Rob Liefeld as writer, artist, and editor, this venerable title gets a new start as part of the Jim Lee-Rob Liefeld universe, which resulted from dwindling market share as much as the Onslaught crossover in the Marvel line in 1996.

The Avengers, this time, are a government-funded organization overseen by S.H.I.E.L.D., comprised of Captain America, Hawkeye, the Swordsman, the Scarlet Witch, Hellcat, and the Vision.

An archeological expedition in Norway discovers an impressive figure frozen in amber, believed to be the Norse god of thunder, Thor. Captain America and his team of heroes are dispatched to investigate. These are the circumstances that Loki, the god of lies, and brother of Thor, attempts to turn to his own nefarious ends in the relaunch of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
