Super-powers are not always a blessing. Lewis was a high-school football star until he was hit so hard in a game that he temporarily lost consciousness and his body went into its ultra-powered, but liquid state. Val’s power to burn things led her to prison where she was abused by the guards. And Ray’s parents were so shocked by his rock-like appearance that they kept him locked up in the basement for years. These were just some of the hapless teenagers who became outcasts due to the same sorts of ultra-powers that made others (like the Strangers) into heroes.

Then these “freaks” received a reprieve of sorts in the form of a mysterious message that called them together. In doing so, they discovered that they were not alone. They became a gang of sorts, the Freex, leaning on each other in order to survive.
