Epic Proportions

This is essentially a showcase for a couple of this small publisher’s properties: the Mas’ “The Eighth Dragon” (the story of a slain warrior who receives an ancient power) and Knudtsen’s “Regime Change” (which features the beginnings of a vampire clan’s bid for power).

The Mas’ effort is a too-brief but competent stab at the typical Shogun-esque army’s tragic fall in battle; it’s an adequate introduction to future chapters. Knudtsen’s similarly quick story, however, is what carries the book. Knudtsen uses the same twisted humor that made his My Monkey’s Name Is Jennifer mini-series from Slave Labor Graphics such an unusual treat. His satire that reveals his political leanings is disturbingly funny, as well—or, at least, Democrats should think so.

With each story only running eight pages, though, it’s hard to give this book anything more than a lukewarm recommendation; there just isn’t enough of a taste to give readers an appetite. It’s to be hoped that the continuations of each story will be in a format that allows real development.
