Tom and Jerry formed one of the funniest and most popular cartoon teams, which started its run in the 1940s. Some of their zany animated shorts even won the Oscar award during their career on the big screen. Tom and Jerry’s adventures in print were chronicled by Dell, the king of movie and television tie-ins, whose high standards of quality and kid-friendly approach guaranteed good reading for young tykes every time out. Tom, the perpetually scheming (and perpetually frustrated) cat, and his ally/adversary Jerry, the mouse, leaned heavily on violent, Three Stooges-like slapstick for their comedy. This approach has made them the butt of politically-correct criticism in recent years, as well as the subject of a brilliant parody (the Simpsons’ popular cartoon-within-a-cartoon, Itchy & Scratchy). The original comic version captures all the fun and excitement of Tom and Jerry that kids have enjoyed for over 75 years.
