Stylish Vittles: Fare Thee Well

The third and ostensibly final volume of Stylish Vittles concludes Eisner nominee Tyler Page’s semi-autobiographical melodrama about Tyler and Nanette, a pair of middle-class young Americans addled by romantic anxieties. Here we rejoin our heroes as they finish their last year of college. So breathlessly in love, Nanette’s plans for a months-long, post-college sojourn in Asia doing Christian missionary work leaves the two shaking with histrionic angst. Can their relationship survive a six-month separation at this crucial juncture?

Fare Thee Well floats along with the same unhurried pace of previous Stylish Vittles books, focusing up close on the crazy freak out that is first love. The celestial story-within-a-story interludes that began in the first book continue. Readers who identify with Tyler and Nan’s bond and the conflicts that engulf it may find some measure of consolation in this narrative device meant to locate Tyler’s personal drama in the universal scheme.
