As of 1997, Furrlough was the longest-running anthology of anthropomorphics. Anthropomorphics are animal characters with human attributes and attitudes. The genre is wide enough to range from talking cartoon mice to the decidedly adult antics of Omaha the Cat Dancer. What distinguishes “furries” from the cartoons of old is the general willingness of their authors to cast the characters in complex roles and situations.

Furrlough is an military-and action-oriented anthology series with a surprising range of content. Stories like “Ninjara” star (literally) catlike Ninjas. “Viva la Revolution” is a space war story. Others, like Scotty Arsenault’s “Heebas” strike an almost Disney-like, sword-and-sorcery note with its mice swashbucklers.
