Saint Legend
(ComicsOne, 2003-2004)
™ and © Comics One
As with all genres, there is a certain sameness to Hong Kong kung fu comics, but Andy Seto has come up with an interesting spin on the clichés and conventions that have a very contemporary feel. He borrows from influences as varied as Japanese role-playing games, Chinese mythology, and the German film Wings of Desire. The Eight Immortals have battled demons (cleverly called “hell aliens”) for thousands of years on Earth, until one of them gets involved with a human woman and their status quo begins to unravel, double quick.
Saint Legend packs in as much action and plot as a dozen Marvel comics, with a heady mix of surfboard-riding heroes, fabulous babes (if there’s a downside to Chinese comics, it’s the scarcity of fabulous babes), monsters, and mecha — and even squeezes in a guest appearance by The Monkey King. (His friend, The Holy Monk Sanzo, resides in a floating fortress that looks like a Gundam.) There’s a wealth of imagination at work here and (it almost goes without saying) stunning art.
— S.A. Bennett
