Harley Rider
(Carl Hungness, 1988)
™ and ©1988 Carl Hungness Publishing and the Harley Davidson Motor Co.
An astonishing hodgepodge of a comic celebrating the legend of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Fact and fiction alternate in a series of short pieces, all featuring at least one Harley-Davidson, but with as much as possible crammed into the issue, anything stretching to five pages is positively epic. Gray Morrow and Frank Springer deliver their usual professional work, but the remaining art is very poor, and the writing is clipped and sparse in the manner of 1940s comics. A story is told, often in captions, and there’s no space for anything but plot. It’s difficult to know who this was meant to appeal to. That it’s officially licensed is heavily promoted, but it’s difficult to imagine bikers or comic readers picking this up, each being alienated by the other’s interest.
