Before the galaxy-spanning adventures of Jean-Luc Picard, and before the five-year mission of James T. Kirk, the starship Enterprise had another captain. Christopher Pike was first introduced in the original Star Trek television show, in the pilot for the series. The show eventually aired with several changes, the most notable being the replacement of Pike with Kirk.

The pilot episode was later incorporated as a flashback story, firmly placing Pike as Kirk’s predecessor in the show’s continuity.

Now, for the first time, Pike’s adventures are told from the very beginning, starting with the selection of his crew. The Enterprise is the best ship the Federation has to offer, and her crew needs to meet the same standards. They include the famous Mr. Spock as a cadet-in-training, and the intelligent but enigmatic female First Officer known as Number One. Like the crews in the television shows, the rest of Pike’s team is a mix of aliens and humans.
