Woody Woodpecker (Walter Lantz…)
(Dell, 1952-1984)
™ and ©1953 Walter Lantz Productions, Inc.
Walter Lantz’s Woody Woodpecker was another wacky animal creation to make the jump between comic books and animated cartoons, and was featured in a long-running series from Dell Publishing, who owned this segment of the market for many years. The two most memorable aspects of the Woody Woodpecker cartoons—the fast-paced bebop jazz score and Woody’s annoying ha-de-de-HAH-hah chuckle—are, of course, absent from the comic book version, which instead focuses on Woody’s pranks and mischief. A wily trickster, Woody just as often gets his just deserts in the end, much to his undying humiliation.
