Brickman Begins!
(Active Images, 2005)
™ and © 2005 Lew Stringer
Brickman Begins is the definitive collection of the legendary Batman spoofs from British fanzines from the late 70s to today. The stories feature Loose Brayne (aka Brickman) and his gold–digging girlfriend Trowel. Together, they duke it out with such dastardly villains likeas The Poker (he pokes people), “2 face” (who has a “2” for a face), and the odd looking Ostrich. The thick duo are often caught, put in a perilous cliffhanger position, and free themselves “off camera” by doing something totally unexpected and ridiculous.
Is it deep and intellectual? No. Does it have characters that touch yourone’s soul? No. How about scathing commentary on the comics industry? No, not really. Is it knee-slapping funny? Nope. It is just fun. It is the “eager to see the next page” kind of fun.
All of this silliness and Basil Wolverton-inspired art plus an introduction by Alan Moore and pin -ups by Alan Davis, Ian Churchill, Tim Sale, and Charles Adlard for $9 make it. This is one of the best bargains in Guffon City.
