Mother’s Oats Comix

    (Rip Off, 1969, 1971, 1977)
™ and ©1969 Sheridan/Schrier

To the contemporary reader, a major drawback to some early underground titles is the proselytizing about mind-expanding substances by means of wacky illustrations purporting to represent the experience of tripping. To appreciate them you have to be able to appreciate such stuff, and if you can, you have your own trip going. Of the two major contributors, Dave Sheridan started well and developed into an excellent cartoonist, best appreciated in more restrained mode in the 1977 issue. By this time his storytelling skills had developed, while he remained in touch with his original intentions. Fred Schrier is an even better artist—decorative and ornate—but his material is very much mired in the times in which it was created. Look, but don’t read.
