The National Association of Comics Art Educators (NACAE) has teamed with Fantagraphics to produce this anthology book presenting the work from a large talent pool of newcomers who are breaking their way into—or maybe just taking a quick stab at—the comics scene. NACAE is an organization dedicated to fostering the growth of comics through education as well as supporting young cartoonists.
Featured here are stories not in the traditional sense (ones with beginnings, middles, ends)—instead, most of these are stylish snippets that have only enough space to focus on one single moment in time, or a single line of thought…stylish in the like that, despite their lengths, they manage to capture a mood, a sense of place, and in some cases even a sense of color (even though it’s a black and white comic book). The cool thing for the reader is the end result that can typically be expected: an emotion being provoked, the imagination being engaged!
