Hawk and Dove (4th Series)

    (DC, 1997-1998)

One more time…with feeling. For this fourth incarnation, Hawk and Dove are played by an Army-brat woman and a grunge-rocker man. Lt. Sasha Martens is the daughter of Colonel Martens, who had once worked with Doctor Avian to create a race of super-soldiers. Colonel Martens had come to the conclusion that Avian was mad, and put him in for a Section 8 discharge. Unfortunately, they did not part ways in time to save Avian from subjecting Sasha to his own experiment. As a result of the Godwave (from the Genesis mini-series), Sasha and the grunge rocker “Dove” (of the band Thrashing Doves) found themselves transformed, with wings growing from their backs. From there on, it’s the standard run of learning to use new powers while the mad doctor and assorted elements of the military attempt to capture them. The gimmick is that Hawk (the warlike one) is now a woman. By now, the concept seems hopelessly worn out, but Mike Baron and artist Dean Zachary definitely give it their best shot.
