In the early 1940s, MLJ publications produced a number of super-hero comics before stumbling onto a more lucrative formula: the teen humor of Archie and his pals. The reemergence and popularity of super-heroes in the 1960s led MLJ, by then known as Archie Publications, to dust off some of their own Golden Age characters including The Fly, the Shield, and the Web.

Flyman became Mighty Comics as of issue #40 and featured new adventures of the patriotic strongman the Shield (a.k.a. Private Strong), costumed crusader The Black Hood, and the Spider-Man-influenced Web. Later issues featured the Hangman, a grim vigilante; and Steel Sterling, a Flash Gordon-style sci-fi adventure strip.

Mighty Comics made an earnest attempt to emulate the art and packaging of 1960s Marvel titles, but was retired when the series didn’t gain similar reader interest.
