Courtney Crumrin in the Twilight Kingdom

    (Oni, 2003-2004)
™ and ©2003 Ted Naifeh

That rare and badly–needed compliment in an industry whose readership grows steadily older at last applies here; Courtney Crumrin is exactly the sort of book kids should be reading, and exactly the kind of comic book needed to get them interested in the medium. ’Tweens and teens will empathize with Courtney, whose parents love her but just don’t realize what sort of world she lives in. Smarter than her peers, not to mention born to greatness (though whether goodness or evil remains to be seen), she’s alone despite a few scattered friendships growing further frayed. This book perfectly articulates adolescence, and its feeling of some immense potential bursting its way out, if only it had somewhere to go. Courtney is perpetually thrust into dangerous situations due to other people’s screw–ups as well as her own, and frequently must make less than ideal decisions to resolve trouble with a lean toward damage control instead of success. Artist and writer Ted Naifeh has that too–seldom seen memory in adults of what it’s like to learn just how complex the world really is.
