Planet Blood
(Tokyopop, 2005-2006)
™ and © 2003 Kim Tae-Hyung
After World War 5, the survivors start to squabble over the newly inhabitable Earth, and during a battle, a soldier named Sinan gets sent (John Carter of Mars–style) to a standard–issue medieval fantasy world complete with wizards and beautiful princesses. There, he’s swept up in an epic conflict, deciding to help the rightful heir of the country, named (apparently in all seriousness) Prince Noodles, to regain his throne. Soon, they’re all off on a quest to collect ancient relics that could tip the balance of power in their favor. This puts them in conflict with others who want the relics, including the bald Pantera and Minte, a beautiful warrior woman with a Joan of Arc hairdo (and what absolutely has to be the most uncomfortable, impractical bra ever imagined). While it has a memorable title, an attractive cover, and a great writer in Mike W. Barr, even the best words can’t rescue readers from routine genre tropes and art that seems a tad too juvenile for the blood–and–thunder subject matter.
